Communal Violence in Gujarat
-Report by Akbarali Bharmal- Editor-Badre Muneer
| Thursday, 16th Zilhajj 1422h, (28th February 2002) Baad Salaam Al Jameel, The state of Gujarat in India seems to have the knack of being in the news, for all the wrong reasons. It has faced natural calamities such as droughts, cyclones, floods and earthquakes in the last decade and man made holocausts in the form of communal riots several times. Certain cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodra, Surat, Godhra, etc are very volatile and sensitive. Riots takes place on the slightest pretexts, properties are destroyed and lives are taken without any qualms or pretence. The most surprising thing is that people get away scot free even after enacting anarchies of mammoth proportions. The same is the truth of those apprehended and tried in the court of law. As a result, people have been getting bolder and bolder, with almost non existent fear of law, leading to more such incidents. The Babri Masjid/Ram Temple issue has been raked up again since past few weeks, more for political reasons than for any intentions of solving the problem. This movement has had many ugly turns and one more uglier turn took place with the burning of 57 Ram Kar Sevaks in a train at Godhra, by unidentified mobs. This barbaric action is to be condemned in no uncertain words, by one and all, irrespective of their religion, caste or creed. Many theories floating notwithstanding, the fact remains that innocent lives were taken away in a most inhuman manner. What can be proved by burning women, children and men alive? What purpose is achieved, except that it to become a convenient excuse for a chain reaction of more murders, more anarchies, more violence, more injury, more pain, more fury. The inflictment game goes on, of destroying the lives and properties of innocent bystanders, and of seeking perverse pleasure of it. This is precisely what is going on today, in this state of Gujarat, which is a part of India, which prides itself of its tradional values and culture. The burning of human lives yesterday promoted a Gujarat Bandh today (and there shall be an India Bandh tomorrow), which created a spate of violence in the entire state, killing as many as other 80 people including 6 in police firing and properties worth of millions and millions of rupees looted or burnt down to ashes. This is happening all over the state. The minority community is being attacked from all corners. Human beings are stabbed, with knives and swords or being burnt alive. Properties are being identified and gutted down to ashes after being looted. As many as 26 towns/cities are under curfew as on this evening. And very surprisingly, mumineen have been the target of their attacks in many places. As the reports come in, mumineen have suffered very heavy financial losses all over the state. In Ahmedabad, Saifee Colony near the Qutbi Mazaar has been attacked and unconfirmed news of incidents of stabbing have been reported. The Qutbi Mazaar itself is under serious threat. In Rajkot, as many as 32 mumineen establishments have been looted or burnt and one mumineen injured. This is the first time that communal riots have erupted in Rajkot after independence. Office of Badre Muneer too have been pelted with stones and the pane glasses shattered. In Viramgam, we have reports of 40 to 70 establishments looted and burnt. This is the second time happening to them during this decade. In Godhra too, though no specific news have yet come of total damages, confirmed news of burning down of a paint factory owned by mumineen has just been received. Lunavada, Vadodra, Bulsar..... so many other towns are under threat and it is impossible to ascertain the extent of damages at the moment. Why mumineen this time specifically? Is it because they are peace loving lot and will not retaliate? or because they are prosperous and have more number of visible business establishments? Why? Why? There is no answer as of now. As we file this report well after midnight here, reports of para military forces taking over the control of the state are coming in. Most probably, the state may be handed over the military by morning. Aqa Maula TUS has performed Doa for all mumineen and Ibadullah and mumineen have found solace from the sacred Qalemaat of Huzurala TUS. May Allah Grant Life ta Qayamat with Sehato Aafiyat to our beloved Maula TUS, the Bawa Shafiq, who has so much compassion for his Farzandos. Ameen. Badre Muneer will try to provide information to any mumineen in Alaame Imaan, regarding the well being of their relatives/friends here in Gujarat, subject to availability and other practical contraints.
