The Right Hon. Paul Martin, Canada's Finance minister and the person most favoured to become the next Prime Minister when Mr. Chretian steps down, accepted the Toronto Jamaat's invitation for a reception and dinner on Sunday March 10th at 7.00p.m. Mr. Martin was greeted by Janab Amilsaheb Shaikh Zohair Shakir. A guard of honour was staged by the First Burhani Scouts. Ayanul Jammat were then introduced to the Minister. The Minister was led to the Masjid where he was briefed on the Fatemi "aasars" in the Masjid and especially on the mehraab, on the way we conduct our majaalis, and the way we say our namaaz. An exhibition was set-up depicting Aqa Moula's meetings with world dignitaries,various architectural projects undertaken by Aqa Moula(TUS), and the growth of the Dawoodi Bohra community worldwide.
The evening programme started with Tilawaate Qura'n-e-majid and introductory speeches by Janab Amilsaheb and Shk Habib Tawawala. The Minister then spoke. He said the Masjid looked beautiful from the road, but the beauty increased many fold as he came inside towards the Masjid . He congratulated the Toronto Jamaat for building such a fine Masjid. To the youth of the community, he said that they are the heirs to a rich heritage. Preserve it, do not let it slip by. The Dawoodi Bohras, he said believe in self-reliance, hard-work and honesty. "These are the same values we, Canadians hold dear." On interest, he said that the Canadian economy is burdened with $500 billion debt and on this the country pays $37billion interest. "Would it not be great," he wondered aloud, "if the country were to follow our example of an interest-free society."
He expressed a desire that he may have the opportunity to meet with Aqa Moula(TUS). The Minister was then presented with a Shaal, tasbih and ettar.
